What is Balance?
The balance metric in NURVV Run relates to how symmetrical a runner’s technique is between the left and right sides of the body. All runners will exhibit some imbalances which might not directly affect their running style. To run more efficiently and without any significant compensations, both sides of a runner’s body should be equally strong and fully engaged in the running motion.
A good running balance (minimum asymmetry) has been shown to reduce the energy cost of running. Minimizing significant compensations to the left or right side of the body should help to reduce undue stresses and risk of potential running-related injury.
Monitoring Balance
NURVV Run calculates the degree of left-right balance for cadence, step length, footstrike and pronation and presents this combined information in Running Health as the Balance score. Runners can track their levels of cadence, step length, footstrike and pronation balance to identify any significant asymmetries in their gait characteristics and also delve into more detail on each of the specific metrics within the “in detail” graphs.
Improving Balance
More information on how to maintain a balanced running technique is outlined in Running Health / Improving Balance to Reduce Injury Risk.
