Massage

Massage therapy is another strategy used by some runners in between run sessions to aid recovery, primarily with the objective of reducing muscle soreness and stiffness. The positive effects of massage for athletes occur via biomechanical, physiological, and psychological mechanisms.

Most recommendations would suggest that post-event massage (within 2 hours) would be most beneficial for runners who have been pushed further than is usual for them, either by a taxing event or because they are in a period of higher-intensity training. Massage therapy has been shown to limit the effects of muscle soreness and reduce soft tissue friction. It may also have a role to play in reducing inflammation, improving immune function, as well as boosting your mood and energy levels.
